Fold Equity In Tournament Poker

Understand fold equity, why shoves can win without showdown, and how it affects tournament poker decisions.

Definition

Fold equity is the value you gain when opponents fold and you win the pot without needing to show down the best hand.

Why it matters

Short-stack tournament shoves often rely on fold equity. A hand can be profitable to shove even when it is not thrilled to get called.

Example spot

A5s on the button at 10BB can work as an open shove because the blinds fold often enough and the hand has blocker and suited equity when called.

Common mistake

Judging a shove only by how it performs when called. The folds are part of the profit.

Tournament spot questions

Do calls have fold equity?

What increases fold equity?

Late position, unopened pots, tighter opponents, stack leverage, and antes can all increase fold equity.
